English Language Proficiency

To complete the requirements for admission, applicants must have an English language proficiency test score in order to place them in an appropriate course. Applicants may be placed in either a non-credit English course or undergraduate credit courses depending on their proficiency in English.

The following guidelines have been developed:

  • All students must present an official certificate of English proficiency on an international standardized test indicating that their score meets the required level for their program of study.
  • If the English language proficiency test results indicate that students need to improve their English skills, they must register in a non-credit intensive English course.
  • Requirements for the College of Business Administration Undergraduate Admission:
    • -  EmSAT: Score Range (1100 – 1225)
    • - TOEFL: Paper based - minimum score of 500
      Computer based - minimum score of 173 iBT - minimum score of 61
    • - IELTS - minimum score of 5.0
  • Requirements for the College of Mass Communication - Undergraduate Admission:
    • - EmSAT: Score Range (950 - 1075)
    • - TOEFL: Paper based - minimum score of 450 Computer based - minimum score of 193 iBT - minimum score of 52
    • - IELTS - minimum score of 4.5
  • Requirements for all Postgraduate Admissions:
    • - EmSAT: Score Range (1400 - 1525)
    • - TOEFL: Paper based - minimum score of 550 Computer based - minimum score of 213 iBT - minimum score of 79
    • - IELTS - minimum score of 6.0
    • - Or any other equivalent internationally recognized test score as approved by the UAE Ministry of Education for all Postgraduate programs.

  • Students transferring from other institutions to AFU must meet the same English requirements.
  • Be aware that all International English Tests are valid for only 2 years.
  • All Undergraduate applicants must provide an approved English Test Score. There will be no exemptions based on the applicant’s citizenship or attendance of English – medium secondary school. Such applicants will be denied admission in any Undergraduate Program at AFU.
  • All Postgraduate applicants must provide an approved English Test Score according to the requirements stated above.
  • There are 2 exceptions to this requirement for Postgraduate Applicants only:
    • I. a native English speaker who has completed his/her undergraduate education in an English - medium institution in a country where English is the official language.
    • II. an applicant with an undergraduate qualification from an English medium institution who can provide evidence of acquiring a minimum EmSAT score range of ( 1100 - 1225 ) or another standardized, internationally recognized test that is approved by MOE, at the time of admission to his/her undergraduate program. (please refer to table above)
